Beer always tastes better when it's free, or so the saying goes. So leave it to a group of college students to find a way to make sure their beer is always free. Well, at least the recipe they use to brew it is. A group of students at IT University of Copenhagen have produced what they claim is the first open-source beer.
The recipe and brand of their beer is published under a Creative Commons license, which means anyone can use the recipe for pleasure or profit. The only catch: If you make money selling their unique beer, you have to give them credit and publish any changes you make to the recipe under a similar license.

High-speed dash to toilet lands Canadian in court

A Canadian teenager caught driving at almost twice the speed limit told police he had overdosed on a protein drink and was desperately looking for a washroom, the Ottawa Citizen reported on Friday.
Hayder Mobarak's tale did not impress a local judge, who gave him a whopping C$926 fine ($760) and banned him from driving for 30 days. Mobarak was clocked doing 195 km per hour (115 miles per hour) on a road where the limit was 100 km/h.

French hand out free wine

Wine growers in southern France, eager to alert holiday-makers to the crisis hitting the industry, will hand out 400 000 bottles later this month at toll booths and along rural roads in the region.
Wines produced in the Aude department - in and around Narbonne and Carcassonne - as well as those made in the Languedoc will be given out, especially to tourists vacationing in the Aude, the wine producers' union said.

Randhawa passed her Microsoft Certified Professional examinations last year. She met Bill Gates this week and was taken on a tour of Microsoft's Redmond campus.
The 10 year-old, from Faisalabad in Pakistan, asked Gates why children were not allowed to work for Microsoft and was told that they should concentrate on their school studies.

BMW adds super-vision to night driving

BMW claims that its new 7 Series is the first production car to feature a far infra-red night vision system, used in conjunction with the new high-beam "assist" function to make night driving safer.
A thermal imaging camera covers a distance of up to 300m in front of the vehicle to create an image of objects out of range of the headlights.

Workers find live grenade in woman's couch

Workers removing furniture from the home of a deceased elderly woman got a shock when they spotted an active hand grenade stuck in the bottom of the couch.
The FBI, ATF and Montgomery Police Bomb Squad were called to the scene after the bomb was discovered Thursday.
"They used a robot, armed with a camera, from about 50 yards away from the grenade," Selma Police Chief Jimmy Martin said.

Landon and Anette Pharris, who were charged with contributing the delinquency of a minor, also were ordered to take parenting classes.

Cassandra Joyce Park, 29, who police say used the stage name "Sassy," danced for a few hours before partygoers took up a collection and paid her $150 more to fully disrobe, Anette Pharris said.

Public flogging causes outrage

Two weeks ago Tebogo Malete was publicly flogged at a traditional court in Old Naledi, a village southeast of the Botswana's capital, Gaborone; a photograph of his punishment was published in the weekly newspaper, The Midweek Sun.
Malete, 27, a petty thief, had been sentenced to five lashes for housebreaking at the customary court presided over by the village headman. The humiliating newspaper photo showed him with his pants down and a police officer using a lash on his bare buttocks, sparking outrage in human rights circles.
In reaction, the government has issued a ban on the public flogging of convicted petty criminals by customary courts, but has refused to outlaw such punishment, attracting wide condemnation from human rights groups.
